Recently two residents have been the victims of distraction burglaries where the suspects claimed to be workers for the Borough of Kutztown. In both incidents the suspect distracted the homeowner asking them to take them to various locations in the house to check on water pipes or electrical outlets. In both incidents the suspect got on his cell phone to “check” with a co-worker. We believe this is the way the suspect informs a co-conspirator where to go in the house. That co-conspirator then enters the house through the unlocked door and steals valuable items while the homeowner is distracted by the fake Borough worker.
Please remember, all Borough workers and for that matter other contractors like gas or cable, will carry valid identification and will not be offended if you ask to see it. Additionally, when in doubt, shut and lock the door and call the police to ask for the police to come out to verify the identity of the person at your door.
Please do not feel like you are bothering the police, you’re not!
I hope you find this information useful and remember if you suspect something is not right, call the police at 610-655-4911. In an emergency just dial 911.
